Introducing the 2022 Elantra N Sports Sedan

The standard for affordable sport sedans was set in 2021 when the Hyundai Elantra N was released. With a 1.6-liter turbo-4 that makes 201-horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, the Elantra N delivered the goods. Naturally, enthusiasts wondered what 2022 would bring and we can announce that the goods delivering continues. With 40 specialized N-brand elements applied to the Elantra N, and 276 horsepower, the Elantra N "everyday sports car" is designed to provide a galvanizing driving experience. And for drivers that want to make a sonic statement, the new N Sound Equalizer (NSE) assures the Elentra N will produce unmistakable sounds.

"The N brand vision is to become the world's most respected manufacturer in terms of performance," said Olabisi Boyle, Hyundai's vice president of product planning and mobility strategy. "Our goal is to get the hearts of our customers racing and keep them there."

What exactly is the Hyundai N line?

In a sentence, the Hyundai N line are Hyundai vehicles specially equipped with technology used by Hyundai race teams. More formally, Hyundai explains that the name has three meanings:

First, the N stands for Namyang, where Hyundai has its Korean R&D center and where the N model concept was born. Second, the N references the famous Nürburgring track in Germany which Hyundai utilizes as its European Test Center. Third, the N logo visually looks like a twisting chicane road course.

Can you tell me more about 2022 Elantra N drivetrain?

The 2022 Elantra N is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injected flat-power engine with 276 horsepower and 289 lb.-ft. of torque. As a flat power design, the sports sedan generates maximum output at 5,500 rpm for mind-blowing acceleration. An overboost function (on the DCT-equipped models) provides an extra 10 horsepower for 20 seconds and is engaged via a steering wheel button.

Buyers will be able to choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed dual-clutch (DCT). For 2022, the DCT is a Hyundai N exclusive. It uses a wet clutch for improved performance over dry-clutch transmissions. The performance of the Elantra N with the DCT includes a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

What is N Sound Equalizer (NSE)?

The N Sound Equalizer (NSE) is a special feature that adds to the sonic driving experience. The NSE is a virtual engine sound that not only simulates sounds from Hyundai race cars, but has an equalizer function to allow adjustment of each exhaust character range (whine, throat, bass). This allows the driver to hear a dynamic engine sound and with the variable exhaust valve system, it delivers loud exhaust "crackle" sounds.

What are the other Hyundai N cars?

Hyundai currently offers three N models in the US: the Elantra N, the Sonata N, and the Veloster N. The company has revealed that it is going to expand the N treatment to the SUV segment for a total of seven N brand models by the end of 2022.

What safety features can I expect the 2022 Elantra N to have?

The Elantra N is equipped with a full load of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features, including Safe Exit Warning (SEW), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), High Beam Assist (HBA), and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Alert (RCCA).
